New York Forex Session: Opening Hours, London Overlap, News and Trading Risks

Editorial review: October 10, 2026. Illustrative examples only; not financial advice.

The New York forex session draws interest because the US dollar sits on one side of a large share of global currency trading. Yet the words ‘New York open’ are often used imprecisely. Currency trading is a decentralised OTC market, major institutions may operate across multiple venues and a retail CFD broker can have instrument-specific hours. Treat common session start times as useful scheduling references, not trading signals.

This guide explains New York session timing, how to translate it into Jakarta time, what changes during the overlap with London and how US economic announcements influence the risk of execution. Rather than promise easy profits from volatility, it focuses on creating a repeatable plan backed by observations from your own instrument and broker.

Why the US session matters for currency traders

The Bank for International Settlements’ 2025 global survey found that the US dollar was on one side of roughly 89% of OTC FX transactions in April 2025. The United States was one of the world’s two largest FX dealing locations, following the United Kingdom. These figures explain why global participants pay attention to USD-related events, but they do not tell you whether a currency pair will rise or fall today.

USD data are relevant even to traders who prefer crosses such as EUR/GBP, because a major US release can reshape broad risk sentiment. Still, the magnitude and duration of a reaction depend on how the actual data compare with expectations, existing positions, monetary-policy assumptions and the liquidity available at that moment.

New York session hours: EDT, EST and WIB

A frequently used institutional reference for the New York currency session is around 08:00 New York local time. During US daylight saving time (EDT, UTC−4), 08:00 in New York corresponds to 12:00 UTC or 19:00 WIB. During standard time (EST, UTC−5), it corresponds to 13:00 UTC or 20:00 WIB. Brokers’ actual weekly opening, closing and maintenance periods can differ.

Season New York local UTC WIB (Jakarta)
Daylight time / EDT 08:00 12:00 19:00
Standard time / EST 08:00 13:00 20:00

The United States switches daylight time on and off on dates different from the United Kingdom. In 2026, US daylight saving runs from March 8 to November 1, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The London–New York overlap may therefore move relative to your local clock around March and October or November. Update automated alerts rather than assuming the same WIB hour all year.

The London–New York overlap is active, not predictable

Because financial desks in two major centres are working at the same time, EUR/USD and GBP/USD may show particularly active price discovery during the overlap. High turnover helps explain why many traders observe these windows; it does not imply that a position taken at a fixed clock time has any positive statistical expectation.

A practical check is to compare session-specific spreads, ranges and the number of false breaks of an obvious high or low. Note whether a move occurred before or after an economic announcement. If the overlap produces both the largest profitable excursions and the largest stop-loss slippage in your sample, a gross-profit-only backtest may be misleading.

US news releases: timing and surprise matter

Nonfarm payrolls, the consumer price index, Federal Reserve decisions and inflation or employment reports can affect USD pairs. Not all releases occur at the same US local time; some scheduled reports are published at 08:30 Eastern while Fed announcements commonly use different times. Always consult the relevant official calendar and compare expectations with the reported figures rather than assuming that ‘good data means the dollar rises’.

For a release at 08:30 Eastern, the equivalent is 19:30 WIB during EDT and 20:30 WIB during EST. A spike on the first tick may be followed by a reversal as markets interpret wages, revisions, forward guidance or the balance of risks. Stop and limit orders can be filled at unexpected prices if liquidity is impaired.

Pairs to research: EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY and USD/CAD

EUR/USD and GBP/USD are widely watched during the US session; USD/JPY can be sensitive to US yields, and USD/CAD may react to Canadian and US data. A trader in Asia who wants to keep a regular evening schedule might find it more convenient to track two instruments deeply instead of switching among every pair with an active chart.

Calculate the effective trading cost per transaction using spread, commission and slippage. If two correlated dollar trades appear at the same time, combine the potential losses in one portfolio-level risk check. A strategy that looks diversified by currency pair may still depend primarily on one USD scenario.

A disciplined example: trading after a US release

Imagine a hypothetical EUR/USD price moving from 1.0900 to 1.0950 immediately after a major report. Buying because the last candle is large does not establish a measured edge. A more testable framework waits for the spread to stabilise, identifies a post-release range, chooses an invalidation level and defines conditions under which the trade is abandoned entirely.

Suppose a plan considers entry only after a retest at 1.0930, with a stop at 1.0910 and a target at 1.0970. The proposed 20-pip stop and 40-pip target yield a gross 2:1 reward-to-risk relationship, before fees and execution differences. With a hypothetical $2,000 account and a 0.5% risk budget ($10), the theoretical size for EUR/USD is 0.05 standard lot under the common $10/pip per full standard lot convention. This illustration does not mean that the move will happen or that stop fills are guaranteed.

When should you stand aside?

Skipping a trade may be sensible if the broker’s spread or execution speed deteriorates, if the pair has already traveled unusually far before your normal entry, or if a surprise event makes a predefined stop unreliable. Avoid increasing lot size after a loss to ‘recover during the US session’; this converts a timing strategy into potentially uncontrolled leverage.

Remember that the forex market is not identical to US stock market hours. A retail chart may continue producing quotes beyond the US cash equity close, but liquidity can change. Read the broker’s execution and overnight financing policies if your plan carries positions into later hours.

Review your own results by hour and market condition

Keep a journal of at least several weeks of demo observations: session, instrument, planned entry and exit, spread, actual slippage, news context and whether the trading criteria were met. Analyse results separately for normal days and major announcements. Look beyond win rate to net profit after fees, maximum drawdown, average gain and average loss, and opportunities you declined.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the New York forex session start in WIB?

Using 08:00 New York local time as an institutional reference, it is approximately 19:00 WIB during EDT and 20:00 WIB during EST. Confirm local calendar changes and your broker’s hours.

Is 08:30 New York time always the most profitable forex entry?

No. Some reports are released at 08:30 Eastern, but price can move both ways and execution costs may increase around those releases.

Can I trade only the London–New York overlap?

Yes, you can develop and test a method focused on that interval. There is no guarantee it will work, and you still need position sizing, cost estimates and clear exit rules.
